How long can you stay overseas in retirement? What changes at 2 to 52 weeks

A blank calendar with the three winter months shaded beside sunglasses, for planning how long to stay overseas

Checked 26 October 2026, re-checked monthlyBy the Retirees Abroad teamGeneral information only, how we check

The short answer

In most cases as long as you like: the Age Pension keeps paying overseas. What changes is the rest. At 6 weeks the Energy Supplement stops and your Pensioner Concession Card is cancelled; at 12 weeks the Pension Supplement stops; at 26 weeks Rent Assistance stops and some rates are cut. Checked 26 October 2026.

How long can pensioners travel overseas?

In most cases, as long as you like. Services Australia says you may be able to get the Age Pension for the whole time you’re outside Australia, even if you leave to live in another country. What changes with time is everything around the pension: the supplements, your Pensioner Concession Card, Rent Assistance, your home’s place in the assets test, and the visa and insurance you need.

Red, with this mark: something stops, is cut, runs out or needs you to act.Plain: no change.

Visa
Each country sets its own visitor stay. Thailand gives Australians 30 days visa-free (from 15 September 2026), Bali 30 days on arrival with one 30-day extension, Malaysia 90 days, and Europe's Schengen area 90 days in any 180.
Travel insurance
Smartraveller says insurers quote on the days you're away, and multi-trip policies can limit the length of each trip. Some insurers also cap trips by age and region: CHOICE's example is 35 days worldwide over 80, and 90 days beyond the Pacific over 65.
Medicare
Medicare doesn't pay for treatment overseas (Smartraveller). Agreements with 11 countries help with medically necessary public care there: Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK. You still need travel insurance, Services Australia says.
Age Pension payments
Services Australia says to tell it before a trip of more than 6 weeks. From 26 weeks, your rate depends on how long you lived in Australia between age 16 and pension age: under 35 years, you get a lower rate in most cases (10 years gets 10/35ths).
Pensioner Concession Card and supplements
At 6 weeks away the Energy Supplement stops and the Pensioner Concession Card is cancelled. At 12 weeks the Pension Supplement stops (completely, since 20 September 2026). They come back when you're home, if you still qualify.
Superannuation
A trip on its own doesn't change your super. General information only: a licensed financial adviser can talk about your own super.
Tax residency
A trip doesn't normally change your Australian tax residency; the ATO looks at your whole situation, such as your home, family and plans to return. Many countries count their own tax residents from about 183 days in a year. A registered tax agent can look at yours.
Your home (assets test and renting it out)
Your home stays exempt from the assets test for the first 12 months of a temporary absence; still overseas after 12 months, it counts as an asset. Rent from it counts as income at any length of trip, which can lower your pension.
Rent Assistance
Services Australia says Rent Assistance keeps paying for up to 26 weeks of a temporary trip, while you still pay rent in Australia and get your pension. Leave to live overseas and it stops the day you go.

Moving overseas for good is different: from the day you leave, the Energy and Pension Supplements and Rent Assistance stop, the card is cancelled and the pension is paid at the base rate. Checked 26 October 2026 against Services Australia, the ATO and Smartraveller. General information only; your own position can differ, and Services Australia (132 300) can tell you yours.

Read along a row to see when each thing changes. The red cells are the points where something stops, is cut, runs out or needs you to do something, so one look shows what a longer trip costs you at home. Each place page has the same table with its own visa row, such as Thailand, Bali and Malaysia.

The weeks count from the day you leave Australia. Australia’s immigration department tells Services Australia when you leave and when you come back, so it knows how long you’ve been away.

2 weeks away: a holiday

Nothing changes at home. Your pension, supplements and card carry on as if you hadn’t left, and so does Rent Assistance if you get it. Services Australia says that under 6 weeks away your rate won’t change in most cases.

Two things are true from the first day, though. Medicare doesn’t pay for care overseas, so you need travel insurance for the whole trip, and you must declare every pre-existing condition, Smartraveller says. Australia’s agreements with 11 countries help with medically necessary public care in those countries (Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK), and none of them is in Asia.

A visitor stay or an eVisa covers two weeks in the places we write about. Vietnam asks for an eVisa before you go, and Bali charges for a visa on arrival.

4 weeks away: a month somewhere new

A retired couple pack summer clothes and a sun hat, leaving a jumper behind, to spend winter away overseas
Packing for the sun, leaving the jumpers behind.

Still nothing changes with the pension or the card. A month is under the 6-week line, so you don’t need to tell Services Australia unless something else applies to you, such as getting your pension under a social security agreement or earning a wage.

Thailand’s visa-free stay for Australians is 30 days for arrivals from 15 September 2026 (it was 60). Four weeks fits inside it, with two days to spare. Bali gives 30 days on a visa on arrival, Malaysia 90 days, and Europe’s Schengen area 90 days in any 180.

A single-trip travel policy for your dates covers a month. If you use an annual multi-trip policy, check how long it allows for each trip: Smartraveller says multi-trip policies can limit how long each trip runs.

6 weeks away: the first changes

A retired woman hands her house key to a neighbour at the front door before a winter away overseas
A neighbour keeps an eye on the house.

This is where the pension rules start. At 6 weeks away the Energy Supplement stops and your Pensioner Concession Card is cancelled. The pension itself keeps paying. Services Australia wants to hear from you before a trip of more than 6 weeks: online through myGov, on the Older Australians line (132 300) or at a service centre. A cruise into international waters counts as time away.

Losing the card for the rest of the trip affects the concessions that come with it at home. Our guide to the Pensioner Concession Card overseas covers what it means and how it comes back. Fill your scripts before you go: Smartraveller says to carry medicines in their original packs with a letter from your doctor, and our guide to medicines overseas covers how much you can take.

Visas start to bite too. Past 30 days in Thailand you need an extension or a visa, and in Bali the 30 days on arrival need their one 30-day extension at an immigration office. Some insurers cap trips by age as well: CHOICE’s example caps worldwide trips at 35 days for travellers over 80.

8 weeks away: a winter away

A retired couple in sun hats walk a palm-lined seaside promenade, spending the Australian winter somewhere warm
A warm walk while it is cold at home.

Two months fits an Australian winter away: somewhere warm from about July, home for spring, summer and Christmas. The Energy Supplement and the card stay off until you’re home. The Pension Supplement keeps paying, because you’re inside 12 weeks.

Your home is still your home for the pension. It stays exempt from the assets test for the first 12 months of a temporary absence. If you let it while you’re away, Services Australia counts the rent as income, which can lower your pension, so tell them about the rent as well as the trip.

For the visa, Bali’s 60 days (30 plus the extension) cover eight weeks with a few days to spare. Malaysia’s 90 days on arrival and Vietnam’s 90-day eVisa cover it easily. In Thailand, eight weeks is well past the 30 visa-free days, so check the extension rules or a longer visa with the Thai embassy before you book. Our Thailand retirement visa guide covers both.

12 weeks away: the Pension Supplement stops

A retired man buys vegetables from a market stallholder, getting to know the local market on a long stay overseas

At 12 weeks away the Pension Supplement stops completely. This changed on 20 September 2026: the Department of Social Services says it used to drop to a smaller basic amount after 6 weeks, and now it’s paid in full for up to 12 weeks, then stops. A trip planned on the old rules is worth checking again.

In much of Asia and in Europe’s Schengen area, three months is about as far as a visitor stay goes; the UK, Mexico and New Zealand allow longer. Malaysia’s 90 days on arrival cover 12 weeks (84 days). So does the 90-days-in-180 limit across Europe’s Schengen area, but Smartraveller says that count runs across every Schengen country together. Thailand’s Non-O retirement visa is for people 50 and over, with 800,000 baht (about A$35,650) in a Thai bank or 65,000 baht a month in income (about A$2,900); check the current terms with the Thai embassy.

Insurance needs a closer look at this length. Annual policies can cap each trip, and some insurers cap trips by age and region; CHOICE gives the example of 90 days beyond the Pacific for travellers over 65. Our guide to travel insurance for over 70s has the age limits.

26 weeks away: half the year

A blank year calendar split into two blocks beside two suitcases, for dividing the year between two homes
A year split between two places.

At 26 weeks the pension itself can change. From then on, your rate depends on how long you lived in Australia between age 16 and Age Pension age. With 35 years or more, it won’t change in most cases. With less, you get a lower rate in most cases: Services Australia’s example is 10 years of residence, which pays 10/35ths of your usual rate.

Rent Assistance stops at 26 weeks. Services Australia pays it on a temporary trip for as long as you get your pension, up to 26 weeks, and only while you still pay rent in Australia.

Tax gets a question too. A trip doesn’t normally change your Australian tax residency, because the ATO looks at your whole situation: your home, your family and your plans to come back. The other country may see it differently. Many countries count their own tax residents from about 183 days in a year, and six months is 182 days. A registered tax agent can look at both sides; our guide to tax residency when you retire overseas sets out the ATO’s tests.

Half the year in each place, year after year, means two bases and paying for two homes. Services Australia counts the weeks from the day you leave Australia, so the 6, 12 and 26-week points come round on each trip.

52 weeks away: a trial year

A year away is a real test of living overseas, with a house in Australia to come back to. Services Australia’s own guidance says your home stays exempt from the assets test for the first 12 months of a temporary absence. Still overseas after 12 months, and it counts as an asset. For a homeowner with a valuable house that can cut the pension sharply, or stop it, so the date you come home matters. Our guide to whether the house counts while you’re away works through an example.

Renting out your home and setting up a home overseas are the kind of facts that can point away from Australian tax residency, on the ATO’s examples. Talk to a registered tax agent before you go, not after.

A year usually needs a long-stay or retirement visa. Thailand’s one-year Non-O-A is applied for from Australia and needs health insurance. Portugal’s D7 asks for passive income of at least 11,040 euros a year for one person in 2026 (about A$18,530). Our guide to retirement visas by age compares countries.

Travel insurance built for trips with a return date may not stretch to a year. International health insurance is the cover made for living overseas, and insurers set their own age limits for new members; our guide to international health insurance by age lists what to ask.

Moving overseas for good

A single ticket.

Leaving to live in another country isn’t a long trip, and the weeks don’t apply. From the day you leave, Services Australia stops the Energy Supplement, the Pension Supplement and Rent Assistance, cancels your card and pays an outside Australia rate: the base rate, A$29,520.40 a year for one person or A$44,506.80 for a couple (from 20 September 2026). After 26 weeks the 35-year residence rule applies as well.

You generally claim the Age Pension while you still live in Australia, up to 13 weeks before pension age, unless you move to a country with a social security agreement. Sell your Australian home while you’re a foreign resident for tax and the ATO gives no main residence exemption from capital gains tax, apart from some life events. Foreign residents also lose the tax-free threshold: Australian income is taxed at 30% from the first dollar (2025-26 rates). Medicare depends on living here, though Smartraveller says you can use it for treatment in Australia for up to 5 years after you move.

Moving is one chapter, and the hardest to undo. Our guide to moving overseas for good has the detail, and trying it before you move covers the steps before it.

Coming home between trips

Home again in time for spring.

Usually there’s nothing to do. Services Australia says you generally don’t need to tell it you’re back, and what stopped while you were away comes back if you still qualify. Contact it if a payment or your card doesn’t restore by itself.

There’s one rule for people who come home to live. If you came back to Australia to live, started the Age Pension after you returned, and then travel overseas within the next 2 years, your pension may stop, unless you go to a country Australia has a social security agreement with. Our guide to coming home covers Medicare and the rest.

Questions people ask about how long pensioners can travel

How long can pensioners stay overseas?

In most cases, as long as they like. Services Australia says the Age Pension can be paid for the whole time you’re outside Australia. The extras change: the Energy Supplement and the Concession Card at 6 weeks, the Pension Supplement at 12 weeks, and Rent Assistance and some rates at 26 weeks. The exception is leaving again within 2 years of coming home to live, which can stop the pension.

Yes, if you’ll be away for more than 6 weeks, a cruise included. Services Australia also wants to hear from you if you’re leaving to live overseas, get your pension under a social security agreement, or earn a wage. Tell it through myGov, on 132 300 or at a service centre.

Can I go overseas for 3 months on the Age Pension?

Yes. Your pension keeps paying, but at 12 weeks the Pension Supplement stops, and the Energy Supplement and the card stop at 6 weeks. Home a day or two inside 12 weeks and the Pension Supplement keeps paying for the whole trip.

Does Rent Assistance stop if I go overseas?

Not straight away. On a temporary trip, Services Australia keeps paying it for up to 26 weeks, as long as you still pay rent in Australia and get your pension. If you leave to live overseas, it stops the day you go.

What this means for you depends on

  • How long you lived in Australia between age 16 and Age Pension age.
  • Whether you’re going for a trip or moving to live overseas.
  • Whether you own your home, rent it out, or pay rent in Australia.
  • The country, and the visa its rules give you for the length of your stay.
  • Your age and health, for travel and international health insurance.

This is general information, not advice about your own pension, tax, super or insurance.
