What we do. Retirees Abroad is a free library of information for Australians thinking about retiring overseas: places, situations, topic guides and stories. We also run free live online workshops, and may later offer recorded workshops, paid products or trips.
What we are not. We are a private business, not a government agency. We do not hold an Australian Financial Services Licence or an Australian Credit Licence. We are not financial advisers, registered tax agents, lawyers, registered migration agents, insurance brokers or real estate agents.
General information only. Nothing we publish or say is advice about your own situation. We do not know your full finances, health, family or goals. Before you make a decision about your pension, super, tax, health cover, property, visa or residency, speak with a licensed or registered professional. You can check a financial adviser on ASIC’s Financial Advisers Register (moneysmart.gov.au) and a tax agent on the Tax Practitioners Board register (tpb.gov.au).
Rules change. Every guide, place page and situation page shows when we last checked it and the sources we used. Rules, exchange rates and costs change, so always confirm with the official source, such as Services Australia, the ATO, Smartraveller or the government of the country you are considering. Our page How we check our facts explains how we work.
No providers named. We do not name or recommend particular insurers, banks, airlines, money transfer services or other providers. We explain what to look for, so you can compare them yourself.
Stories and worked examples. Our stories are short summaries of published news reports about real Australians, using first names only, with a link to the original report. Each one is labelled “not affiliated with Retirees Abroad”. The people in them are not connected with us and have not endorsed us. Worked examples are made up to show how the rules work, and are labelled as examples. What happened for someone else may not happen for you.
Pictures. Every picture on our website is made with AI. Most are illustrations. Some include a photo-style picture inside an instant-photo frame, and that picture is made with AI too. None of our pictures shows a real person or a real document, including the people in our stories.
Money. We earn nothing from this website today. If that changes, our page How we make money will say how.
Your rights. Nothing on this page limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Our full Terms and Conditions apply.
