These terms explain how our website, emails, free workshops, recorded workshops, calls and any paid products work. In short: we share general information to help you explore retiring overseas, but we are not your financial adviser, tax agent, lawyer, migration agent or insurance adviser, so please check your own situation with licensed professionals before you act. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law always apply, and nothing in these terms takes them away.
Part A. Using our website
Part A applies to everyone who uses our website, reads our emails or follows us on social media.
1. Who we are and how these terms work
Retirees Abroad is operated by The Trustee for Online Edge Trust (ABN 42 375 407 954), trading as Retirees Abroad Group, of 3/135 Cardigan Street, Carlton VIC 3053. In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean that business, and “you” means the person using our website or services. We are a private business. We are not part of, or endorsed by, Services Australia, the ATO, the Department of Home Affairs, any foreign government or any embassy.
These terms have four parts:
- Part A applies to everyone who uses our website, reads our emails or follows us on social media.
- Part B applies when you register for a live or recorded workshop, or book a call.
- Part C applies when you buy a product or service, or book a trip. Each paid product also has its own short product terms, which we show you before you pay. If the product terms and these terms differ, the product terms apply to that product.
- Part D covers liability, privacy, complaints and other general matters, and applies to all of the above.
You accept Part A by using our website. When you register, book or buy, we will ask you to confirm that you accept Parts B, C and D as they apply. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.
You must be 18 or over to register, book a call or buy from us.
2. General information only, not advice
Our website is a free library of information about retiring overseas: places, situations, topic guides and stories. Everything we provide, including our website, emails, workshops, recorded workshops, replays, calls and any paid products or services, is general information and education. It is not:
- financial product advice,
- tax advice,
- legal, visa, residency or migration advice,
- insurance, health, medical, aged care or real estate advice.
We do not hold an Australian Financial Services Licence or an Australian Credit Licence. We are not a registered tax agent, a registered migration agent, a lawyer, a licensed real estate agent or an insurance broker. A disclaimer like this one does not change what we are allowed to do, so we also design our content to stay general.
We do not recommend any particular super fund, investment, insurance policy, bank, property or visa. When we talk about a situation like yours, we are helping you understand the general rules and work out what questions to ask. We do not consider your objectives, financial situation or needs in the way a licensed adviser must.
Before you make a decision about your money, pension, super, tax, health cover, property or residency, please speak with a suitably licensed or registered professional who knows your full circumstances. Our General information notice says more.
3. How we prepare our information
Sources and dates. Every guide, place page and situation page shows the date we last checked it and lists the sources we relied on, with links. We prefer official sources, such as Services Australia, the Australian Taxation Office, Smartraveller and the official government websites of other countries. Where we rely on a news report or our own research, we say so.
Rules change. Pension, tax, visa and health rules, exchange rates and living costs change, sometimes quickly. Our information is correct to the best of our knowledge on the date shown, and may be out of date when you read it. Always confirm current rules with the official source before you act.
Independence. No business can pay to change what we write, how we describe a country, or what we say in a workshop. Our guides have no paid placements. We do not name or recommend particular insurers, banks, airlines, money transfer services or other providers. Our page How we check our facts explains how we work.
Corrections. If you think something we published is wrong, email hello@retireesabroad.com.au. We will check it, fix it if it is wrong, and record the change in our Corrections log.
AI tools. We use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help with some tasks, such as research, drafting, summarising, translation, checking our writing and making pictures. A person on our team reviews, fact-checks and approves everything before we publish it, and we are responsible for it. We never use AI to create a fake photo of a real person, a fake testimonial or a fake review.
Images. Every picture on our website is made with AI tools. Most are illustrations. Some include a photo-style picture inside an instant-photo frame, and that picture is made with AI too. None of our pictures is a real photograph, and none shows a real person or a real document, including the people in our stories.
4. Stories, worked examples and testimonials
We use different kinds of stories, and we label each one so you can tell them apart.
- Stories. Short summaries of published news reports about real Australians who have retired overseas. We write them in our own words, use first names only as the report gave them, name the news outlet and link to the original report. Each story is labelled “Based on reporting by” the outlet, with the words “This story is not affiliated with Retirees Abroad.” The picture on a story is our own illustration, never a photo of the people. The people in these stories are not connected with us. They have not used our services, have not endorsed us and have not been paid by us. Details are as reported at the time and may have changed since. Our page How we write stories explains how we choose and write them, and how to ask us to change or remove one.
- Worked examples. Examples we make up to show how the rules work. They are labelled as examples and are not real people. Names, ages and figures are invented.
- Testimonials and reviews. If we publish them, they will be the genuine words of real people who have used our services. We do not edit them to change their meaning, and we keep a record of where each one came from. If someone received anything in return, such as a discount, gift or free product, we say so next to their words. We do not offer anything in return for a positive review, and we do not hide genuine reviews because they are negative.
- Our own experiences. Things that happened to our team, told as our own story.
No guarantee of results. What happened for one person, including any costs, savings or lifestyle they describe, does not mean the same will happen for you. Your outcome depends on your health, finances, family, the country you choose, exchange rates and the rules at the time. We do not promise any particular saving, income, lifestyle, visa outcome or pension result.
5. Links, partners and how we make money
Links. We link to other websites, such as government sources, news reports and businesses we mention. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for their content, privacy practices or availability. A link is not an endorsement unless we clearly say so.
How we make money. Today we earn nothing from this website. We do not take advertising, sponsored content, paid placements or referral fees. Our page How we make money explains this and will always show any arrangements we have.
Referral and affiliate links. If we ever receive a fee, commission or any other benefit when you click a link, contact a business or buy from it, we will say so clearly next to the link or mention, and before you give that business your details. A referral payment will not change what we write. We do not name or recommend particular providers on our website, so it is worth shopping around.
Partners are responsible for their own services. Travel partners, insurers, currency transfer providers, financial advisers, tax agents, lawyers, visa agents and property businesses provide their services under their own terms and licences. Please check that a provider holds the licence or registration it needs, in Australia and in the country you are moving to, before you use them.
We only pass on your details if you ask. We never give your details to a partner unless you ask us to, or agree to it at the time.
6. Comments, questions and things you send us
You may send us questions, comments, stories, photos or reviews, for example in a workshop chat, a form, an email, a survey or on our social media pages.
Please keep private details private. Do not post your full name, address, health conditions, account numbers or details about family members in a chat, comment or Q&A box that other people can see.
How we may use what you send. We may read out or answer your question in a workshop, recorded workshop or replay using your first name only, or no name. We may use the questions we receive to improve our workshops and write new guides, without naming you. We will only publish your story, photo, review or full name with your permission, and you can withdraw that permission for future use at any time.
What you must not post. Anything unlawful, defamatory, abusive, threatening or discriminatory, anything misleading, spam, or anything that promotes a business (including your own) without saying how you are connected to it.
Moderation. We may edit comments for length, hide or remove any comment, and block anyone who breaks these rules. We treat staff and other attendees with respect and ask the same of you.
Your content stays yours. You keep ownership of what you send. You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to use it as described in this section. You confirm you have the right to share it and that it is accurate as far as you know.
Comments are not our views. Comments from other people are their own opinions. We do not check them, and they are not advice.
7. Our content and how you may use it
Our website, workshops, recorded workshops, recordings, guides, illustrations and other materials are owned by us or used with permission, and are protected by copyright. You may view, download and print them for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may share anything we prepare for you with your own advisers and family. You may quote a short passage if you name us and link to the page. You may not copy, resell, republish, record, post online or use our content to train software or AI tools without our written permission.
8. Accessibility
We want our website, workshops and products to work for everyone, including people who use screen readers, magnification, captions or keyboard navigation. Our Accessibility statement explains what we do and how to ask for information in another format.
9. Using our services from outside Australia
Our information is written for Australian citizens and residents, and focuses on Australian rules such as the Age Pension, super and tax residency. If you are not an Australian resident, some of it may not apply to you. Laws in the country where you live may also apply to you.
You are responsible for making sure your use of our services is lawful where you are. Any amounts we charge are in Australian dollars, and your bank may charge currency conversion or overseas transaction fees. Workshop times are shown in Sydney time unless we say otherwise.
If you live outside Australia, our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.
Part B. Workshops, recorded workshops and calls
Part B applies when you register for a live or recorded workshop, or book a call.
10. Live workshops
Workshops. Our live workshops are free and run online. To register, you give us your name, email and mobile number. Other questions on the form are optional. We send your joining link and reminders by email and SMS.
General rules only. In a workshop we explain how the rules work in general and answer questions in general terms. We do not recommend, offer or arrange a super fund, investment, insurance policy or other financial product.
Recording and replays. We record our live workshops. Zoom asks you to agree to the recording when you join. You join with your microphone off. If you speak, you may appear in the recording, and by speaking you agree to that. Replays are shared with registered attendees until the Sunday night after the workshop, then removed. Please do not share replay links or download, copy or post recordings.
Reuse of recordings. We may later edit the recording of a live workshop into a recorded workshop. Before we do, we remove anyone who appears or is named, or ask their permission. If part of a live workshop is pre-recorded, we say so.
Conduct. Please be respectful. We may remove anyone who is abusive, disruptive or posts spam or promotions, and decline their future bookings.
Changes. We may change the time, content or presenter of a free session, or cancel it. We will try to give you notice and offer another date.
11. Recorded workshops
In future, some of our sessions may be recorded presentations that play at a set time or on demand. We call these recorded workshops.
- We tell you it is recorded. The registration page, the confirmation email and the start of the session say the presentation is recorded, and show the date it was recorded. We never describe a recorded session as live.
- Questions. The registration page tells you how your questions are answered, for example by our team in the chat during a scheduled showing, or by email after the session, and how soon to expect a reply. We never suggest someone is answering live when no one is.
- Nothing pretend. We do not show made-up attendee numbers or made-up chat messages, and we do not use countdown timers or “limited places” claims that are not true. If an offer has a real deadline or limit, we state it and we stick to it.
- Rules may have changed since recording. A recorded workshop reflects the rules on the recording date. We update or remove it when a key rule changes, and list any important change since recording below the video.
- Watching later. We may offer on-demand viewing for a limited time, shown on the registration page. Please do not share, download or post recordings.
12. Free calls
Free calls. If you book a free call with us, it is for your questions. There is no obligation to buy.
We do not cold call. We only phone or video call you if you have booked a call or asked us to contact you. On any call, we do not recommend, offer or arrange a super fund, investment, insurance policy or other financial product.
Recording and AI notes. If we want to record a call or use an AI note-taking tool, we tell you at the start and ask for your agreement. You can say no and still have the call.
13. Emails and SMS
Messages about your booking. When you register for a live or recorded workshop, we send your joining link, reminders and any replay by email and SMS. These are part of the service you asked for.
Marketing. When you give us your details on our website, we may also send you news about our workshops, trips and planning services by email, SMS and WhatsApp. Every marketing message identifies us and has an easy way to stop, and you can ask us to stop at any time. We send:
- workshop invitations and our newsletter by email, about once a fortnight, and
- occasional SMS about upcoming workshops and offers, no more than 8 marketing SMS a month.
Who it comes from. Our SMS come from an Australian number or a sender name that identifies us, and every message names Retirees Abroad.
How to stop. Reply STOP to any SMS, or click “unsubscribe” in any email. You can also email hello@retireesabroad.com.au, or reply with any words that clearly ask us to stop. If you’d rather talk, email us and we’ll call you back. We stop marketing messages within five working days, usually sooner. We never ask you to log in or pay to unsubscribe.
Costs. We do not charge for our messages. Your mobile provider may charge its normal rate for an SMS reply, and may charge for messages received while you are overseas.
Messages you still need. If you unsubscribe from marketing, we may still send messages about something you have booked or bought, such as confirmations and receipts.
New number? If you change or give away your mobile number, please reply STOP or tell us first, so our messages do not go to someone else.
Part C. Paid products, services and trips
Part C applies when you buy a product or service, or book a trip.
14. Paid products and services
From time to time we may offer paid products or services, such as guides, planning calls or trips. We do not list prices on our website. Before you pay, we show you the total price, what is included, how it is delivered and the refund terms, and these terms apply to them.
Prices. Prices are in Australian dollars and show the total amount you pay, including any GST and any compulsory fees. We are registered for GST, so our prices include GST. If a charge depends on how you pay, such as a card surcharge, we show it next to the price before you pay. If a price is for a limited time, we show the end date and stick to it.
Subscriptions. If we offer a membership or subscription, we will tell you before you pay how much it costs, how often you will be charged, when it renews and how to cancel. If you signed up online, you can cancel online, in a few simple steps.
Payment. You pay at the time of purchase through our payment processor. We do not see or store your full card details.
Cancellations and refunds. The details for each product, including any cooling-off or refund period, are shown before you buy. Any voluntary refund policy we offer is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Your consumer rights. Our goods and services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled to cancel your service contract with us and to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value. You are also entitled to choose a refund or replacement for major failures with goods. If a failure with the goods or a service does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have the failure rectified in a reasonable time. If this is not done, you are entitled to a refund for the goods and to cancel the contract for the service and obtain a refund of any unused portion. You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage from a failure in the goods or service.
If you buy a product during a phone call that we started without you asking us to, you may have extra cooling-off rights under the Australian Consumer Law, and we will honour them.
15. Trips
Any trip we promote is provided by a travel business (our travel partner), not by us, unless the trip page clearly says otherwise.
- Who your contract is with. When you book, your contract for the trip is with the travel partner, under its booking terms. Before you pay, those terms show you the travel partner’s legal name, its ABN and any accreditation it holds.
- What we do. The trip page explains our role, for example designing the itinerary with the partner, hosting the group or running information sessions before you go.
- What we receive. The trip page says what we receive from the travel partner, such as a commission, a fee or a free place for our host.
- Payments. You pay the travel partner directly. We do not hold your trip money unless the trip page says otherwise.
- Prices. Trip prices show the total you must pay in Australian dollars, including compulsory fees and charges. Optional extras, single supplements and card fees are shown next to the price.
- Minimum numbers and cancellations. A trip may need a minimum number of travellers. If a trip does not go ahead, the partner’s booking terms set out your refund, and your rights under the Australian Consumer Law also apply.
- Health, mobility and insurance. Please check that a trip suits your health and mobility, and hold travel insurance that covers your age, any health conditions and every country you visit. Smartraveller (smartraveller.gov.au) has current travel advice.
- Passports and visas. You are responsible for holding a valid passport and any visa you need. We can point you to official sources, but we do not give visa advice.
- Your health information. If you tell us or the partner about health or mobility needs, we use it only to plan the trip safely, and share it with the partner only with your agreement.
Part D. General
Part D applies to everything above.
16. Limits on our liability
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded.
Subject to that, and to the extent the law allows:
- we do not promise our free website, workshops, recorded workshops, replays and calls will always be available or free of errors,
- we are not responsible for decisions you make, or losses you suffer, from relying on general information without getting advice about your own situation,
- we are not responsible for third parties, including travel partners, news outlets we link to, and the online meeting and other platforms we use,
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as lost profits or opportunities, and
- where our goods or services are not of a kind ordinarily acquired for personal, domestic or household use, our liability for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee is limited, at our choice, to supplying the services again or paying the cost of having them supplied again.
Your responsibility. You agree to use our services lawfully and to keep any login details safe. If you break these terms, for example by sharing paid content or posting recordings, you are responsible for loss you cause us, but only to the extent the loss results from your breach and not from our own actions.
17. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it and how you can access or correct it. Our Cookie policy explains the cookies on our website.
18. Complaints and disputes
Tell us first. If something has gone wrong, contact us at hello@retireesabroad.com.au. If you’d rather talk, email us and we’ll call you back. Tell us what happened and what you would like us to do. We will acknowledge your complaint within 2 business days and give you a full response within 30 days. If we need longer, we will tell you why and when to expect an answer.
Review. If you are not happy with our response, you can ask for it to be reviewed by the owner.
Outside help. You can contact any of these at any time:
- your state or territory consumer affairs or fair trading office, about our products and services,
- the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, about privacy (see our Privacy Policy),
- the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), about unwanted emails or SMS,
- the travel partner, and ATAS if the partner is accredited, about a trip.
We are not a member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA), because we do not provide financial services. If your complaint is about a financial adviser, insurer or other licensed business, contact that business first. It may be a member of AFCA.
Mediation. Either of us can ask Consumer Affairs Victoria, or your state or territory fair trading office, for free help to resolve a dispute. You can also go to your state or territory consumer tribunal or a court at any time.
19. Changes, governing law and contact
Changes. We may update these terms, for example when the law or our services change. The version shown here, with its date, applies from then on. Changes will not affect a product you have already paid for unless the change is in your favour or required by law. If a change is significant, we will tell you by email.
Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. You and we can take a dispute to the courts of that state, and to any court that has jurisdiction under the Australian Consumer Law.
