Last updated 20 October 2026.
Our aim. To give Australians thinking about retiring overseas clear, accurate, dated information, so they can ask better questions and make their own decisions. Everything we publish is general information, not advice.
Who writes and checks our pages. Our pages are written and checked by the Retirees Abroad team. Each guide shows who last checked it and when.
Where our facts come from
We use sources in this order:
- Official Australian government sources, such as Services Australia, the Australian Taxation Office and Smartraveller.
- Official government sources of the country concerned, such as its immigration and tax authorities.
- Treaties, legislation and official statistics.
- Reputable news outlets and research bodies, always named and linked.
- Our own research and experience, labelled as such.
We link to the source for every important fact. Where official sources disagree or are unclear, we say so.
Dates and reviews
Every guide, place page and situation page shows a “last checked” date and lists its sources. We re-check every guide, place page and situation page every month against its official sources, and update the checked date when we do. We also review a page when we learn that a rule has changed, for example after a federal Budget or a change announced by a foreign government.
When we show costs, we give the date, the source and the currency, and the exchange rate if we converted it.
Stories and worked examples
Our stories summarise published news reports about real Australians, in our own words, with a link to the original. Our page How we write stories explains the rules we follow. Worked examples are made up to show how the rules work. They are labelled as examples and are not real people.
How we use AI
We use AI tools to help us research, draft, summarise and check our pages, and to make the pictures on our website. AI drafts are a starting point only. A person on our team checks every fact against its source, edits the words and approves the page before it is published, and we take responsibility for it.
Every picture on our website is made with AI. Most are illustrations. Some include a photo-style picture inside an instant-photo frame, and that picture is made with AI too. None of our pictures shows a real person or a real document.
Independence
We decide what to write. No business can pay to appear in our guides, to change what we say about a country, or to see a page before it is published. We do not name or recommend particular insurers, banks, airlines, money transfer services or other providers. We explain what to look for, so you can compare them yourself. Today we earn nothing from this website. If that changes, our page How we make money will say how.
Conflicts of interest. If anyone on our team has a personal or financial interest in something we write about, such as owning property in a country we cover, we say so on that page.
Mistakes and corrections
If we get something wrong, we fix it quickly. To report a possible error, email hello@retireesabroad.com.au with the page and what you think is wrong, and a source if you have one.
- We check the claim against the original source.
- If we were wrong, we fix the page and add a note at the bottom saying what changed and when.
- If the change affects a fact, figure, date or meaning, we add it to our Corrections log.
- If the mistake was in a live or recorded workshop, we add a note under the recording and fix the next session.
